WHAT IS IT ALL ABOUT?
Tamil
weddings are not less than a royal affair. They pay attention to all the small
details in a wedding Ritual. The unique feature of the wedding is that they
prefer to use red and saffron colors which are a symbol of richness, purity,
and sensuality. The wedding and their ceremonies start a week ago. Typically
Tamil Matrimony is based on the sacred Hindu texts, but it also has a modern
touch. Generally, the priest of the families read bride and groom horoscope and
fixed date and time of marriage. All wedding rituals are performed based on the
Grah Nakshatra.
THE PRE-WEDDING JITTERS
Tamil
wedding starts with fixing the venue of the D-Day by the bride’s family. Once
the venue is fixed then the ladies of the families start their scared Tamil wedding rituals. Palikai Thalikkal ritual is performed where the 9 types of food grains
are placed in the clay pot and watered by the 5 to 7 elder women on a regular
basis. The grains are sprout in a few days; it is the symbol of the auspicious
start of a new family. After the wedding day clay pot food grains are thrown
into the small pond.
THE WEDDING EVE
On the
wedding eve, a formal & small engagement is performed where the bride and
groom exchange their wedding rings
The D-Day
Tamil
wedding starts early morning. The Groom wear Dhoti and drape a scarf and take
an umbrella in his hand and go for kasha yatra(go to the wedding venue) where
the bride’s father request them to stop the yatra and perform a wedding with
her daughter. Then the bride and her father and groom sit in the mandap where
the priest chanted mantras where the bride’s father finally hands over the
bride to groom. The groom family offers 9-yard traditional sari to the bride,
then the bride changes their dress and comes back to the mandap.
The priest
finally performs the wedding ceremonies where the bride and groom take the
seven rounds after that the groom tie a knot of traditional thread around the
neck of the bride which is known as mangalsutra. Guest and family members are
present the gifts to the bridegroom and they are served by the lavish food.
